Biographical Notes

Funeral brochure, :
William (Bill) Joseph McKeown was born on 26 February 1928 in Brisbane to parents Joseph and Annie McKeown. He was the middle child to older sister Molly and younger sister Tess (dec'd). Bill was educated at Guardian Angels Primary School, Wynnum and then at St Laurence's College, South Brisbane. In 1943, after one year at St Laurence's, Bill entered Pius XII Provincial Seminary Banyo first completing his secondary education in the minor seminary, and then moving to the major seminary; he was ordained for the priesthood on 29 June 1953 after almost 11 years in the seminary.

Bill's first appointment was Assistant Priest to St Joseph's Gayndah (Dec 1953-Jan 1962). At the end of this appointment he enlisted as full-time Chaplain to the Armed Forces (Jan 1962-June 1969) attached to the 4th Field Regiment at Wacol. During this time he spent two months in Vietnam, from October to December in 1968. Following his discharge from the army he worked for six years as a missionary in New Guinea (June 1969-June 1976). After 14 years of military and missionary service, Bill returned to the Archdiocese in June 1976 as Assistant Priest to St Catherine's Parish, Wishart. After six months he was appointed Parish Priest to Our Lady Help of Christians at Nanango where he remained for 17 years (Jan 1977-Jan 1994). Bill retired to Jolly Crescent Beerwah in January 1994 and continued to provide supply ministry to St Mary's Parish, Maryborough and the North Country Deanery for the first five years of his retirement.

In December 2016 Bill moved from his Beerwah home into residential care at Southern Cross Care Little Mountain, Caloundra. With his health deteriorating and after several trips to hospital, it was decided in early November 2018 to move Bill into Marycrest, Kangaroo Point where he would be closer to family and friends. It was here he died peacefully on Wednesday 12 December 2018.
May he experience the joy and eternal peace of the Risen Lord.
