Chatelut, Jean, SM, French, Visitor
Servant in New Caledonia
Jean was born in the Lyons Diocese on 12 October 1812. Apparently a late vocation he was professed as a Marist on 21 September 1846. He passed through Sydney in 1851 on the way to New Caledonia. The length of his stay is hard to determine, on account of the absence of Directories in the 60s and 70s. Father John Hosie's list of Marists gives his death date as 26 November 1869, at Toulon. The age was 57.

Fr. Jean Chatelut, d. 1869
New Caledonia
He was born in Loire, France in 1812. He was a diocesan priest, being professed a member of the Society at Lyons in 1846, aged 34. He left the next year with 9 priests and 5 brothers for Oceania. After a few months at Anatom in Vanuatu, he took part in founding the mission on the Isle of Pines in 1848 with Frs. Roudaire and Goujon. He was then involved in the second attempt made by Bishop Douarre to establish the mission on the mainland, at Hiengbene and then at Yate. In 1850 he returned to France, where he died at the age of 57.
