Country News, The Southern Cross, Adelaide, 23 July 1915, p 7, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article166426729:

Jamestown, July 12.
Some time ago, when the Rev. P. Kennedy was leaving Jamestown, the Catholics held a meeting and decided to present him with a purse of sovereigns, as a small token of their esteem. This has now been accomplished and a substantial amount has been collected and forwarded to the Rev. Fr. Kennedy, who is now at Port Augusta. The Rev. Fr. who has ever been a most zealous priest, had carried out his duties in a manner that was most edifying to the Catholics of the district. He will be much missed, especially by the younger members of the congregation, in whom he seemed to take a special interest. His place was taken by the Rev. P. Connolly. That priest remained only a short time, but whilst he was with us the Catholics were proud of him. The people were much grieved when he had to leave. He gave the Catholics no opportunity to show their appreciation and sympathy in a practical manner, but went away after saying good-bye to a few. However, he has carried away with him their good wishes for his future welfare. Fr. Smith next assisted in Jamestown and districts for a few weeks; but is now also leaving. The Catholics met last Sunday and presented him with a substantial purse of sovereigns, and the ladies of the congregation gave him a valuable travelling bag. Mr. Quigley, in making the presentation, said although Fr. Smith had only been with them a short time, it was long enough to earn the respect of all, and wished the Rev. Father every blessing that Cod could bestow, and asked him to accept those gifts as a small token of our esteem. The rev. recipient, in reply, said it came as a surprise to him to receive such tangible proof of their regard, but assured the Catholics of Jamestown that he would ever remember them in the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Their generosity was proverbial, and their sympathy was unbounded. He thanked them all most heartily for their generous gifts.
