He came to Australia as a young priest in 1907 and served for many years in the Adelaide Diocese before coming north to Toowoomba and beginning his work as Parish Priest in Taroom. When Toowoomba was erected into a Diocese separate from Brisbane in 1929, Father Sheehan remained in Taroom until 1939. It was at that time that his health began to fail seriously, and Bishop Roper transferred him to Charleville where he assumed lighter duties as assistant to Father Joe Skelly who was the Parish Priest. When the Parish of Helidon was ceded from the Archdiocese of Brisbane to the Diocese of Toowoomba in 1942, Father Skelly was appointed its Parish Priest, and he was accompanied by Father Sheehan, who remained there for the last years of his life. His health continued to decline and he died in St Vincent's Hospital, Toowoomba on 25th February, 1947 aged 70. A Solemn Pontifical Requiem Mass was celebrated in the Cathedral by Bishop Roper, in the presence of a large number of the Diocesan clergy. Religious and children of the schools assisted at the Mass, with choirs from St Saviour's and St Ursula's rendering the music. Fr Sheehan was buried in the Toowoomba/Drayton Cemetery.
