Diamond Jubilarian Among Marist Fathers
Xavier was born on 27 May 1851 in the Clermont Diocese and received Marist profession on 4 November 1877. He passed through Sydney in 1883, and would appear to have spent his missionary life in the New Caledonia region. Directories show: Ile de Pins, N.C. (1886); Noumea (1893), Kone (1899). From the early 1900s his name disappears from the Directory, which likely indicates his return to France at that time. Strangely, his name again re-appears in the Directory in 1938, when he was stationed on the St. Louis Mission, N.C. He died there on 22 December at the ripe old age of 87. He must be reckoned at that age a Diamond Jubilarian.

Fr. Xavier Chaboissier, d. 1938
New Caledonia - Vanuatu
He was born in Puy-de-Dôme, France in 1851. After studying in a Marist college in France, he joined the Papal armed forces aged 19, and was wounded in action, winning a military medal. He then studied law in Paris before joining the Society, being professed in 1877. After ordination, he arrived in New Caledonia in 1883, aged 32. His first 3 years were spent in Noumea as assistant priest and secretary to Bishop Fraysse. He then went to the Isle of Pines for two years. In 1887 he was in the first group sent to Vanuatu to begin the Mission there. However, after three months at Mele, Port-Vila, he became ill with fever and had to return to the Isle of Pines. In 1888 he went to Bourail. Three years later he was missioned again to Vanuatu and appointed to Lamap, Malekula, but once again fever forced him back to New Caledonia. He went to Nemeara first and then went to Kone where he was to spend 41 years. His last 4 years were spent in retirement at St. Louis, where he died at the age of 88.
