Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 60:

Cognet, Claude, SM, French, Visitor
Scholar of the Classical Maori Language

As is the practice in this listing, mention is made of passers-by, such as the priests going to their assignments to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Claude Cognet was such a one, passing through Sydney in 1885. He was born on 3 December 1858 in the Lyons Diocese receiving his Marist Profession on 19 March 1880. Seemingly he spent his career of close on three years in attending to the Maoris, becoming proficient in their language. A casual survey of Directories shows that he was stationed at Wanganui River (Wellington Diocese (1899); Okato (1908). At this time there were close on 200 Maori converts on the latter mission. Claudius, as he was called, was in charge of the wide-ranging mission of Otaki (Wellington Diocese) in the last few years of life, and where the Maori Catholics numbered 800. He died on Christmas Eve 1912 at the age of 53. Presumably his remains rest in Otaki.
