Cummins, Michael, S.M., Irish
Assisted Bishop Viard on His Deathbed, 1872
There are not many of Irish birth on the list of Marists, but Michael Cummins is one exception at least. He was born in the Diocese of Armagh on 2 September 1838 and made his profession in religion on 29 April 1867. He left Gravesend, London, for New Zealand on 3 December 1870 in the company of Bishop Viard. Apparently he spent the first few years of his ministry at the Wellington Cathedral, attending to the first Bishop on his deathbed in 1872. The Marist Year Book 1927 provides the information that he was stationed at Thorndon from 1872 to 1874 and at Reefton from 1874 to 1876, where he was the first resident. On return to England he did mission work at St. Anne's London, and for many years was Pastor at Kew. He died there on 23 February 1911 at the age of 72.
