Father M. Dooley, S.J., at a solemn office and requiem for the repose of his soul, celebrated at St. Ignatius on Thursday morning. Father Dooley, who had been ailing for some time, succumbed at the North Adelaide Private Hospital on Tuesday, and his decease will be a severe loss to the cause, for which he laboured for many years. The ceremony at the church was most impressive. Archbishop Spence presided, and he delivered an eloquent panegyric, in which he referred to the valuable work and excellent qualities of deceased. Administrator of the Cathedral (Fr. J. A. Gatzmeyer) acted as master of ceremonies. The late Fr. Dooley, who was 71 years of age, had been 45 years in the ministry, and he had served in Ireland, India, New Zealand, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. He had held his last charge, at Norwood, for the past seven or eight years. --- The Gossip of the Week: Round About Australia, Freeman's Journal, Sydney, 11 May 1922, p 18, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-page13243098: The death occurred at the North Adelaide Hospital recently, of the Rev. Michael Dooley, S.J., Norwood. Father Dooley was born in Co. Galway, Ireland, in the year 1850, and would be 72 on the 8th of September next. At 17 he consecrated his young life to God in the Society of Jesus. Later we hear of him doing the work of the Master in India. Next we find him at Invercargill, New Zealand, as curate to the late Father McEncroe, S.J. A short period here sufficed to endear him to all who knew him. For nigh on 30 years he lived in the Colleges of the Society in Sydney and Melbourne, what may be called the hidden life, peacefully pursuing the ideals of the Master. --- Fr David Strong SJ, The Australian dictionary of Jesuit biography 1848-2015, Second Edition, 2017: Teacher; born Shrule, Co Mayo, Ireland, 8 September 1850; died Adelaide, South Australia, 26 April 1922, aged 71. Michael Dooley entered the Society in Ireland, 27 September 1867, did his juniorate studies at St Acheul, Champagne, and then went to Calcutta, India, in 1874, lecturing in English language. He was ordained at Asansol, Bengal, in 1879, and was sent to Australia, teaching at Xavier College, Kew, 1879-82. He taught and was prefect of discipline at St Aloysius' College, 1882-86, and in this latter year also did his tertianship. He taught at Riverview, 1886-87, before going to New Zealand and Invercargill, 1887-89, where he worked in the parish of St Mary's and was minister. He was superior in his last year. He became unwell for a few years and then returned to teaching at Xavier College, 1890-95, and at St Aloysius' College, 1895-1914. He did parish work at Norwood, South Australia, from 1914. He was described as a retiring man, who did his work quietly and well. He was known as a scholar of great ability, a fluent linguist, well-read in many languages, and had a fund of accurate information. He was always a man of precise habits. When on holidays in Sydney he carefully took a tram to each suburb, rode out to the terminus and back, and when he had exhausted the lines, declared his holidays over, and settled to work again. His spare time was spent reading, and Aristotle remained his pet study when he was well on in years. (Reproduced by permission of Fr David Strong SJ.) |
