Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 35:

Chataigner, Jean Baptiste, SM, French, Visitor, Golden Jubilarian
A Foot-Slogger in New Zealand

Born in Semur-en-Brissenais, Diocese of Autun, on 4 December 1821, and professed as a Marist on 17 December 1847, the first reference on the Australian scene that we find to Jean Baptiste is his passing through Sydney in 1860. First reference to him in Lillian Keys' Philip Viard, Bishop of Wellington, relates to his building a church in Akaroa. Many other references are found in the same work to the 'foot-slogger' who gave New Zealand twenty years of zealous service. Probably his passing through Sydney in 1882 indicates a return to France. Among his many achievements in N.Z. we record the building of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Christchurch in 1864. Chataigner died at La Neyliere, France on 16 May 1901. His age was 79 and he had attained a Golden Jubilee of service.
