Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 68:

Collins, Richard P., Irish
Collector for Building St. Patrick's Cathedral

This Richard, to be distinguished from Richard of South Melbourne, was born in 1855 at Youghal, County Cork. He studied in turn at All Hallows and Maynooth and was ordained for the Diocese of Cloyne and the English Mission sponsored by the same Diocese in 1879. After serving on the English Mission for nine years, he came to Victoria, arriving on the 'Ormuz' in July 1888. After serving at Carlton, Williamstown and Castlemaine until 1892 he was appointed to the Cathedral staff. Archbishop Carr and Dean Donaghy, Cathedral Adm. deemed that Richard would be an asset in helping to collect on the large building fund debt, and so he was assigned to a task which he dutifully carried out until his sudden death on Christmas Day 1895. He died at Geelong, but whether or not he was using that parish as headquarters in collecting is not clear. Likewise the circumstances of his death at the age of 40 are unclear. He rests in the Eastern Cemetery, Geelong, among the many priests buried in the vicinity of the Mortuary Chapel.
