Biographical Notes

Obituary. Rev. Patrick Carroll, Freeman's Journal, Sydney, 29 October 1914, p 29, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article111297223:

On the 4th of October, Father Patrick Carroll (formerly of this Archdiocese) died at the Benedictine Monastery, New Norcia (W.A.). The deceased, who was in his 71st year, was born on the 8th April, 1844, in Paulstown, Co. Kilkenny. After a course of classics under Mr. McDonald, of Kilkenny, he proceeded to the Ecclesiastical College, Carlow, where he was ordained in June, 1867. Arriving in Sydney towards the end of the same year, he was first stationed in the Sacred Heart parish, and subsequently, laboured at St. Benedict's, St. Mary's, St. Francis' (Haymarket), and at Parramatta, Cooma, and Wollongong. He also spent a short time in the dioceses of Wilcannia and Port Augusta. In 1905 he withdrew to New Norcia, where, engaged in missionary work, he remained till his death. Though in failing health for seven or eight months, it was only a fortnight previous to his death that he became seriously ill. Perfectly conscious to the last, he passed peacefully away at noon on Rosary Sunday. A Solemn Requiem for the repose of his soul was held on Monday, 5th inst. The Office was chanted by the Benedictine choir, and some fifteen priests in attendance. There were also present Rev. Brother Stanislaus (Superior of the Marists), the Sisters of St. Joseph and the convent boarders, as well as many of the laity. The entire Benedictine Community accompanied the remains to their last resting-place. Father Carroll's two sisters are religious—one a Sister of St. Joseph at Cluny (Seychelles), the other a Sister of the Good Samaritan. The children of his only brother (who died many years ago) are in Ireland. May he rest in peace!

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 28:

Carroll, Patrick, Irish
The writer finds P.C. an elusive quarry, and statements that follow are submitted tentatively in the hope that a reader will turn on the searchlight. In the files it is stated that he was ordained from Carlow on 15 June 1867, arriving in Sydney the same year. He served for a time at St. Benedict's, and from 1870-8 was at Parramatta. Probably he went from there to St. Mary's Cathedral and Haymarket. From 1883-6 there was a Carroll at Wollongong but the Directory gives the man's initials as R.V. On 2 August 1890 a P. Carroll appears at the Broken Hill Synod of priests. Directories of 1893 and '4 show that he continued on in that new diocese under Bishop John Dunne. One can only guess that it is the same P. Carroll who is listed for Pekina, South Australia in 1898, and after a lapse of time appears at New Norcia in 1906 and 1915.
