Biographical Notes

To the Editor of the Independent Journal, Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News, 28 April 1854, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article3175184:

Sir—You will oblige by inserting in the next number of your journal, the following brief notice of the Rev. Mr. O'Neil, who departed this life at the Episcopal Residence, Perth, on the 25th instant, aged 24 years.

The Rev. Thomas O'Neil was a native of Clonmel, in the county of Tipperary, Ireland. Having been duly educated for the ecclesiastical state at St. John's College, Waterford, he was raised to the dignity of the holy Priesthood in the month of November, 1852, with the full approbation of his Superiors.

Having volunteered to labor for the spiritual welfare of his exiled countrymen in the Mission of Western Australia, he renounced all that was dear to him in this world, and quitted his Native land, in company with his Lordship the Right Rev. Dr. Salvado, Bishop of Port Victoria, and arrived in this colony in the month of August, 1853.

Sincerely loved and respected by all who knew him, always admired for his untiring zeal in the discharge of his sacred Ministry, and deeply deplored for his early mournful death, he has gone to receive his reward from him who has said, that "Every one who shall leave house, or brethren, or sister, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for His sake, shall receive an hundred fold, and possess everlasting life."—St. Matthew, 19c. 29v.

I trust a generous public will receive this small tribute to his memory from one who loved him during life, and to whom his name shall be ever dear.

M. O'Callaghan.

Perth, April 27th, 1854.
