R.C. Chapel, The Daily Northern Argus, Rockhampton, 27 July 1891, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article213346009:

At the 11 o'clock Mass yesterday, the Rev. Father Biggs read to the congregation part of the translated text of the Pope's last Encyclical [Rerum Novarum] — the Holy Father's chef d'oeuvre amongst his many addresses to the faithful since his accession to the papal chair. The Encyclical refers at length to the social question, and treats of the means best adapted to deal with it so as to result in contentment to all, irrespective of creeds. It is written in an unsectarian spirit; and no one hearing the beautiful, forcible, and argumentative language of the Encyclical (albeit it is translated from a tongue foreign to most persons in this locality) could believe it was written by a Roman Catholic, and an Italian. Yet such is the case. The Encyclical was not designed for Roman Catholics alone, but for the whole world; and the fact that it has already moved the foremost amongst the thinking men of the day bears in itself proof of the catholic spirit of the gifted author. The official English translation is by Dr. Hedley, Bishop of Newport and Menevia, and it is a masterly one; Father Biggs received it but a few days ago. Next Sunday he will read that part of the Encyclical which bears upon the part that the State should take in dealing with Socialism.
