Prayer Calendar: Deceased Priests who have ministered the Catholic Faith throughout Toowoomba and districts, 1864–2025, Compiled by Annie Carrett, Diocesan Archivist, 2001, Updated by Gabrielle Saide, Diocesan Archivist, 2023:
Rev Michael Cronin, died 20 Feb 1992

Michael Cronin was born at Highfields on 15th January, 1912, the second of seven children to James and Maria Cronin (nee Moore). He attended Coalbank, Kleinton and Highfields State schools and St Mary's, CBC, Toowoomba. After two years working in the rural areas, he undertook his Seminary training at Springwood. The young student was sent to Irish College, Rome to complete his studies, and he was ordained at the Lateran Basilica in Rome, on 5th March, 1939 by Cardinal Traglia - just prior to the commencement of World War II. His first appointment was St Patrick's Cathedral in 1940, followed by Dalby (1941); Charleville (1942); Roma (1942-48); Quilpie, as PP (1948-55) - where he built the convent for the Sisters of St Joseph under extreme financial difficulties (he did much of the work himself); Holy Name and Allora (1955); St George (1957-61) - where he was instrumental in having a new church built, which was opened 3/5/59; Jandowae (1961-71) - built the new church at Jandowae in 1963; Stanthorpe, as PP (1971-76) and Pittsworth as PP (1976-85). He became known as "Michael, the builder". He retired in 1985 to Lourdes Home, and after a prolonged illness, died in St Vincent's Hospital in the early hours of the 20th February, 1992. He is buried in the Toowoomba Lawn Cemetery. He was a very capable Administrator without keeping any books. He was able to summarise a situation in a second with apt cutting remarks. Upon reaching 80 he resigned himself to die.
