Roman Catholic Church, Richmond, The Australian, Windsor, Richmond, and Hawkesbury Advertiser, 25 April 1874, p 5, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article70660231:

A meeting of the Parishioners of the Catholic Church at Richmond took place after Divine Service on Sunday morning last, for the purpose of inaugurating a Committee to carry out in the most suitable manner a system of collecting, and maintaining a fund for the support of the clergyman, the Rev. Austin Byrne, who has recently been appointed to assist the Rev. Dr. Sheehy in the charge of his district, which includes a very large area. Extending as it does from Castlereagh in one direction to the lower McDonald in the other. It is a pleasing fact to observe that since the Rev. Doctors arrival amongst us, the congregation in each of the churches has largely increased.

Byrne, James Austin, OSB, Irish, Left Mission
Language Professor at Lyndhurst

The follow-up to the career of this man is found in 'Tjurunga' (Benedictine Review), Appendix 1, p. 41. County of origin is unknown. He first appears as a Benedictine postulant at St. Mary's Sydney in 1856. He received the Religious Habit on 29.6.1857 and was professed at Lyndhurst on 18.8.1858. Minor Orders were conferred on 19.3.1859 and Diaconate on 28.2.1863. Soon after priesthood ordination on 7.9.1866 he was appointed a military chaplain. Probably before ordination, and certainly after, he taught Greek and Latin at St. Mary's Lyndhurst. CD's of 1870 & 1871 give his places of service as Darlinghurst and St. Benedict's, Broadway. Some time later he left the priesthood and married a lady who had been in the religious life. How he fared in the matrimonial state is not recorded.
