Biographical Notes

Fr David Strong SJ, The Australian dictionary of Jesuit biography 1848-2015, Second Edition, 2017:
Delaney, Charles

Teacher and pastor; born Ireland, 15 December 1867; died Norwood, South Australia, 4 July 1949, aged 81.

Charles Delaney entered the Jesuits, 14 December 1885. He was a novice at Milltown Park and did his juniorate at Tullamore, 1888-89, and philosophy at Milltown for the following three years.

He arrived in Australia to teach at St Patrick's College, Melbourne, 1892-3, followed by three years at Riverview and four years at St Aloysius' College, Bourke Street. Theology studies followed at Milltown Park, with tertianship at Tronchiennes, Belgium.

He returned to Australia in October 1905, and taught at St Aloysius' College, where he was also prefect of studies and organised a choir. He spent a short time at both Riverview and St Patrick's, but returned to St Aloysius' as prefect of the church, working within the parish, 1913-15. After that, he performed parish duties at Richmond, Hawthorn and Norwood, 1915-49.

Delaney was a small but very robust man, full of energy and vitality. He had an active, keen love of histrionics, and a warm admiration for the beautiful. He was interested in music and drama, and was most successful in directing school plays. He was also interested in all Church ceremonies, and had a bright, vivacious character.
