Peter Baker, older brother of William, was educated with the Marist Brothers, Darlinghurst, Sydney, at St Joseph's, Hunters Hill, and St Aloysius' College, Bourke Street. He entered the Society at Xavier College, Kew, 1 February 1889, and finished his noviciate at Loyola College, Greenwich. Juniorate followed in the same place, 1891-2. He taught and prefected the boarders at Riverview, and taught at St Patrick's College, 1892-98. Philosophy studies followed at Valkenburg, Holland, 1898-1901, with theology at Milltown Park, Dublin, 1901-06. Tertianship in Belgium followed immediately, 1906-07. Then began a lengthy stay at Xavier College, Kew, 1907-31, where he mainly taught chemistry and physics and was a house consultor. He did great work in the teaching of science at the college, planned new laboratories, personally supervising the work, and taught in them for over 20 years. He also installed a wireless station. He had a clear mind and gave a very lucid explanation of his subject to his students, a number of whom later became prominent scientists or medical professionals. Even when young, his somewhat ponderous manner, and deliberate way of speaking, gave the impression of age, but never diminished the affection his students had for him. Subsequent years were spent as assistant director of the Riverview observatory, 1931-33, lecturing in mathematics and science at Loyola College, Watsonia, 1933-34, and doing parish work at St Ignatius', Richmond. His last years, 1951-55, were spent at Canisius College, Pymble. He was a good friend to many, kind and thoughtful of others, and concerned for the spiritual and temporal welfare of those entrusted to his care. (Reproduced by permission of Fr David Strong SJ.) |
