Rev Daniel Walsh, died 25 Sep 1939

Daniel Walsh was born in Castlemartir, Co.Cork, Ireland on 14th July 1858, the son of Robert Walsh and Ellen Hannan. He was a relative of both Monsignor Patrick and Denis Fouhy, and of the Superior General of the Redemptorist Fathers, Fr John Magnier, C.Ss.R. He was educated at the National School at Castlemartir and from there went to St Colman's Seminary, Fermoy (where he was a classmate of Archbishop Mannix), and finally to St Sulpice, Paris, where he was ordained for the Brisbane Archdiocese on 29th July, 1886. He arrived in Brisbane in December of that year and subsequently served in Charleville and Roma for some months before being appointed the Parish Priest of Gatton in 1887. He was to remain there until his death. The appointment to Gatton occurred under the following circumstances: It's Parish Priest, Fr J Cummins was taken ill while Daniel Walsh was making a retreat in Toowoomba and the latter was sent to Gatton for the week-end. He remained there for 52 years. He made two trips back to Ireland, from late 1902 to early 1904 and from March until December 1927. For a man of small stature he was renowned as an expert horseman and excellent shot. He also bred trotters but raced them under a different name, and ran a head of cattle in the backcountry of Gatton. He died in the Mater Hospital, Brisbane of "coronary thrombosis and senile decay". He is buried in the Gatton Cemetery.
