Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Ryan, Bede Francis

Born in Armidale on 6 October 1931 he was educated by the Sisters of Mercy and at De La Salle College Armidale. He studied at St Columba's College Springwood from 1949 and at St Patrick's College Manly, and was ordained by Bishop Edward Doody in St Mary's and St Joseph's Cathedral, Armidale on 11 March 1958. Following ordination he studied Liturgy for two years in Rome. A brother, Rev Dr Patrick Ryan taught classics and later became President of the Catholic Institute, Sydney. Two sisters were members of the Ursuline order. He was highly regarded as a public speaker, described as 'a man of infinite jest and wit'. He died in Brisbane on 27 September 1977, as the result of injuries received in a motor vehicle accident a month earlier at Bolivia, near Tenterfield, while he was travelling between Glen Innes and Brisbane from one ordination to another. He was parish priest Bingara at the time of his death. He was buried in Armidale cemetery. His headstone incorrectly states the date of ordination as 11 May 1958.
