He attended St Saviour's Convent Primary School and St Mary's, CBC. His Seminary training took place at Pius XII, Banyo, and reportedly he was a brilliant student, possibly the 'cleverest' that had ever attended the Seminary. He was 3rd in the State in his Senior (1943) year without even doing much work - brilliant in sciences and maths. He was ordained in Toowoomba on 26th July, 1950, by Archbishop Patrick Mary O'Donnell. His first appointment was to Warwick in 1951, followed, in that same year, by the Bishop's House and the Cathedral. From 1952-54 he was at Pius XII, Banyo, and from 1954-56, St Patrick's Cathedral, Toowoomba. He taught seniors at CBC Warwick in 1956 and was then based at the Cathedral from 1957-59; Allora (1959-60); Roma (1960-65) and Augathella in 1965. He returned to Allora and died as Parish Priest in 1979. He had suffered poor health for many years, and even though this forced him to look after himself he carried a real devil-may-care attitude towards his health - seemingly not to care. Neville was the golden-voiced priest of the Diocese and his reputation - for which he seemed to care little - preceded him everywhere. Idolised by his people, he was renowned at Augathella (in particular) for his interest and organisation of school team football - he was crazy about it. He gradually went to a very bad state of blindness and suffered immensely before his death. He is buried in the Toowoomba/Drayton Cemetery. Reproduced by permission of Bishop Ken Howell. |
