Biographical Notes

Melbourne Diocese Honoured by the Pope. Many Distinguished Honours Come to Priests and Laymen. Right Rev. Mgr. Benson, P.P., Geelong, Advocate, Melbourne, 9 May 1929, p 16,http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article171657760:

There are not a few notable figures in Geelong. One of the most notable is the Very Rev. Dean Benson, P.P., who has done so much in the historic parish of St. Mary's, where, as Rector, he succeeded the late Archpriest McKenna. Born in Limerick, Mgr. Benson was ordained to the priesthood at All Hallows in 1887. He was attached to St. Patrick's after his first coming to Australia. He was later curate at South Yarra, and, subsequently, parish priest in that important parish. Dean Benson, whose brother, a distinguished surgeon in England, died the other day, comes from a distinguished and scholarly family. Readers of "The Advocate" are aware of the large and important schemes which the Dean has in hand for the promotion of the welfare of St. Mary s parish. The faculty for organisation and the driving force of the new Monsignor are powerful qualities in his successful prosecution of these schemes. A gift for sound financing has stood Mgr. Benson in good stead. Urbane and intensely likable, the Monsignor is very popular in the progressive city on the Barwon.
