Some Memories
by Father Brian Mathews
Michael Clune
I sit and listen to all the stories about Clune and how he was a tyrant and could intimidate people just by looking over the top of his glasses at you, which is all probably true, but this is not the Clune I knew. As a young boy I used to walk past the old Crystal Brook Presbytery on my way home from school. His sister, Mrs Hetherington, would always be out in the garden as I went past (I think she may have been waiting for me now that I think about it!) and she would ask me in for a drink or some nice dessert, ice cream and jelly or something she had made the night before for the Mons, her brother. Anyway we used to sit outside on the verandah most of the time but every now and then I would get a glimpse of Mons Clune sitting in a darkened room smoking his cigar. He never said much but every now and then he would ask how school was or what I was doing for the week-end. Maybe the fire in him had gone out by then but I remember him and Lee with great affection.
