His brother Patrick went on to join the Christian brothers and predeceased Stan in 1988. Stan was born in Chinchilla on 27th May, 1914. The family later moved to Toowoomba. He studied Philosophy at St Columba's in Springwood and went on to complete four years of Theology study at Collegio Brignole-Sale Negroni in Genoa, Italy. He was ordained in Genoa on 22nd May, 1937 by Cardinal Minoretti and soon returned to the Toowoomba Diocese to take up his first appointment as Assistant in his home parish of Holy Name. This appointment was followed with work in Goondiwindi ( 1938-40) and St Patrick's Cathedral (1940-42). In 1942 he took up position as Army Chaplain with the 2/33 Infantry Battalion where he gave distinguished service in New Guinea and Borneo. In 1946 he returned to Australia and was appointed to St Patrick's Cathedral (1946-47) followed by Texas-Inglewood (1947-49); St George (1949-57); Dirranbandi (1957-58); St Theresa's, Harlaxton (1958-71); Pittsworth (1971-76) and Dalby (1976-85). Whilst in Dalby, in 1980, he was made an Honorary Prelate with the title Monsignor in recognition of his dedicated service in the Church. He retired in January 1985 and took up residence at the James Byrne Centre, Highfields. As a young man, Fr Stan Skehan endeared himself to all sections of Parish life. His concern for the youth of the Diocese led him to become greatly involved in the Catholic Young Men's Football and Cricket Clubs, and the St Patrick's Tennis Club. He was highly thought of in all the Parishes that he worked. Mons. Skehan is buried in the Toowoomba Garden of Remembrance. Reproduced by permission of Bishop Ken Howell. |
