Dunne, Patrick Joseph

Born in Ireland, place and date unknown [1890). Details of education unknown. He studied at Propaganda Fide College, Rome, where he obtained his Doctorate of Divinity. He was ordained in the church of St John Lateran, Rome on 5 June 1917, then travelled to Australia via New York. His early appointments were as assistant priest at the cathedral (1919), then Gunnedah (1920-28). He took up duty as Administrator of the Tamworth parish on 6 October 1928, and remained there for many years. He was Diocesan Inspector of Schools from 1917 to 1927, succeeding Laurence Mahony. While in that position he established the Diocesan Bursary and Certificate for sixth grade students, being a written examination in English, Religion, Mathematics, and a combined paper in History and Geography. The six bursaries allocated were provided one each by De La Salle College Armidale, Christian Brothers College Tamworth, St Ursula's College, Armidale, St Dominic's College Tamworth, St Joseph's School, Glen Innes and St Mary's College, Gunnedah. He was made a Domestic Prelate (Monsignor), and transferred to the West Tamworth parish, where he died on 21 March 1965 [sic]. He is buried in the Tamworth cemetery.
