Biographical Notes

Denis M. Long, Pioneer and Early Priests, Archdiocese of Brisbane, Deceased or retired by 1929, 2021, p 196:
Rev Father John Doherty

Father John Doherty was an Irish priest who first served on the New Zealand mission but owing to ill health moved to Australia for five years.

John Doherty was born at Cardonagh in co Donegal Ireland in May 1896. He was educated for the priesthood in Ireland and ordained in 1923.

Fr Doherty arrived in New Zealand in November 1923. He was curate in the parish of Thames during 1924 and 1925. Towards the end of 1925 he came to Queensland.(1)

Pugh's Almanac has him stationed at Charleville in 1926 and 1927.(2) Toowoomba diocesan records have him there only in 1928 and 1929.(3) He appears on the Maranoa/Charleville federal electoral roll in 1928. This is his only registration in an Australian federal electoral roll.(4)

By 1930 he was stationed in Wynnum with Father John J Kelly. How long was he in Wynnum? Fr Doherty was given a chalice by the parishioners of Wynnum in gratitude for his ministry during his time in the parish, which may indicate the length of his stay. That chalice was inscribed:

To Rev J Doherty
from WYNNUM friends 1.3.30

This chalice is now in the Dominican Convent at Henderson in New Zealand.

On his return to New Zealand Fr Doherty was stationed at Huntly by late 1930. He then became parish priest of Peeroa. He drowned in a swimming accident on 6 January 1934 and is buried in St Patrick's cemetery in Pamure, a suburb of Auckland.(5)
