Biographical Notes

Fr David Strong SJ, The Australian dictionary of Jesuit biography 1848-2015, Second Edition, 2017:
O'Brien, Thomas [includes a photograph]

Pastor; born Sydney, 20 June 1844; died Linz, Austria, 9 August 1925, aged 81.

Thomas O'Brien, brother of John, was the first Australian-born Jesuit, and was educated at West Terrace, Adelaide, and St Aloysius' College, Sevenhill, before entering the Society at Sevenhill, 5 February 1866. He seemed to have completed all his Jesuit studies in Austria, returning to Australia as a priest in 1877.

He was sent immediately to St Aloysius' College, Sevenhill, as prefect of studies, and taught rhetoric to the scholastics and students. In 1881 he was made vice-rector and later rector of Sevenhill.

In 1886 O'Brien was made superior of the South Australian mission until 22 January 1890, when he went to Norwood for parish work. In 1898 he returned to Vienna, where he gave retreats, and then was minister of the Kalksburg College, where he taught English, 1899-1914. His final residence was the Freinberg College, Linz. He died finally of cancer.
