Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Donleavy, Canice C

Born in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1892, he was educated at St Canice's College, Kilkenny. He studied at St Peter's College, Wexford. Date of ordination unknown, but probably 1918. He came to the Armidale diocese immediately after World War I and served as assistant priest in Armidale, Gunnedah, Moree, Inverell, Glen Innes and Bundarra. He was appointed as parish priest Wee Waa in 1937. He was reputed to be an excellent musician and writer, and wrote 'Sonnets on the Psalms', poetic versions of the psalms as translated by him. He was also a good public speaker, and gave occasional broadcasts on radio. He was described as having a jovial disposition and a keen sense of humour. He took ill on Christmas Day 1943 and was forced to seek hospital treatment in Sydney at the beginning of March 1944. He died in Lewisham hospital on 18 March 1944. He was buried in Wee Waa cemetery. His family name is spelt 'Dunleavy' on his headstone.
