Fr Whelan was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Brisbane on June 25, 1933 and arrived in Brisbane in May 1934.

He served first as assistant priest in the Sacred Heart Parish, Rosalie, 1934-1939, and then as assistant in the Bulimba parish of Sts Peter and Paul, 1939-1945.

Sick leave
In 1945, he was appointed parish priest of Norman Park, where he remained until he left for Ireland on sick leave in November 1971.

He resigned in October 1974 through ill-health.

A concelebrated Requiem Mass for the repose of his soul was celebrated in St Stephen Cathedral, Brisbane, on January 14, 1976.
