D'Arcy, David John, Archdeacon, Irish
Scholarly Cousin of Archdeacon John McEncroe

The circumstances of the coming of the cousin of McEncroe to Goulburn, prior to the erection of a Diocese, are described by Mgr. Patrick Hartigan in 'The Men of '38'. There was a manpower shortage. Dean Walsh was doing duty alone and needed an assistant. A fund was sponsored by the Dean and his friend, Fr. Michael Kavanagh, to collect the wherewithal to pay the expenses of bringing a priest from an Irish seminary. Kavanagh, according to the Hartigan account, did a round of 500 miles on a collecting tour. The money was handed to McEncroe who was setting out for Rome in 1858, spurred on by the Campbelltown Conference of priests intent on ending Benedictism and giving the Church in Australia an Irish flavour. McEncroe spent the money in bringing his cousin, David D'Arcy, who had been ordained in St. Patrick's Carlow in the year named. Baptism records in Goulburn indicate that the newly-selected was on duty from 1859 to June 1861, helping out the future bishop, William Lanigan. From Goulburn he moved to Queanbeyan for a few months, assisting his erstwhile sponsor, Michael Kavanagh. In the same year we find him on duty in Bathurst, remaining for a little over a year. When a Diocese was ushered in by 1865 D'Arcy was either pioneering at Peel or at Parkes, a parish which at the time was attending to the Catholics at Forbes. Hartigan records ('The Men of '38' and essays published in the Australasian Catholic Record, 1943-5) that at some stage the "bush curate" was appointed Professor of Logic at St. John's College, University of Sydney. This appointment may have been in the time prior to his charge as Pastor of Wellington. A further eulogy of the man is given by Hartigan: "He started out on a holiday to Ireland and spent it doing mission work in the slums of London ..." No doubt the zeal of the "bush curate" in earlier days became the zeal of the Wellington Pastor in his 25 years or more in that centre. He had served the Archdiocese of Sydney well, and in the Bathurst Diocese (1865) just as well. He went to his reward on 17 April 1907. The age would be about 74.

Prayer Calendar: Deceased Priests who have ministered the Catholic Faith throughout Toowoomba and districts, 1864–2025, Compiled by Annie Carrett, Diocesan Archivist, 2001, Updated by Gabrielle Saide, Diocesan Archivist, 2023:
Rev David John D'Arcy, died 17 Apr 1907

There was a David John D'Arcy that was born in Ireland, studied at St Patrick's College, Carlow and served in the Goulburn and Sydney districts, dying in 1907. He is buried in the Catholic section of the Wellington Cemetery. Pugh's list a D.J.D'Arcy serving in Dalby in 1868. In January 1873, Rev D'Arcy took charge of the Parish of Hill End in NSW. In the Issue of Town and Country dated 23/2/1901, Rev J D'Arcy is mentioned as celebrating a requiem Mass at Bourke, NSW. As he is buried in Wellington, presumably he was part of that Diocese for a time.
