Fr. Marin Breton d. 1881
Tonga
He was born in Ain, France in 1815. After 13 years as a diocesan priest he entered the Marist novitiate and was professed in 1853. In 1858, aged 43, he arrived in Tonga. He founded there the station at Hihifo. After 5 years he was sent to Vava'u, an island at that time completely Methodist. He lived there alone for 18 years and became known as "the hermit of Vava'u". He lived a life of solitude, before the Blessed Sacrament, in outstanding holiness after the manner of St. Charles de Foucauld. He died there on Vava'u at the age of 66.
