Denis M. Long, Pioneer and Early Priests, Archdiocese of Brisbane, Deceased or retired by 1929, 2021, p 165:
Rev Phillip Brady

Philip Brady was born at Drumlish in County Longford in 1860. He was the third son in the family of eight children of Philip and Margaret (nee Mulligan) Brady.(1)

Phillip received his ecclesiastical education at St Patrick's College Carlow where he was ordained, for Brisbane, by Dr Browning Bishop of Ossory in June 1885. He arrived in Brisbane via Melbourne on the Curzon in November that year. His first placement was with Fr James Breen at Kangaroo Point. From April 1892 he spent a short time with Fr James Enright at Beaudesert. At the time of the 1893 floods he was appointed to assist Fr John O'Reilly in Maryborough.(2)

When Fr O'Reilly was appointed secretary to Archbishop Dunne and administrator of St Stephen's cathedral at the end of 1898 Fr Brady, already some five years in Maryborough, was appointed the fourth parish priest of that parish.

In 1912 Fr Brady installed a Whitehouse organ in the choir gallery of the Maryborough church at a cost of £900. In March of the following year, Archbishop Duhig blessed a new church bell and belfry. He was pleased to know that the 4cwt bell had been cast and manufactured locally – by Walkers Ltd. It was 61 cm wide and 71 cm high.(3)

During 1901/1902 Fr Brady visited his mother and relatives in Ireland. The parishioners showed their high esteem for him prior to his leaving.(4) His mother lived to the venerable age of 103 years dying just three years before Fr Philip.(5) Fr Denis Martin relates the story:

When a visitor succeeded in getting past his housekeeper, Miss Clara Ringelstein who kept charge of the front door, one of the first objects to meet the eye within the old Presbytery was photo of Fr Brady's mother who for most of that time was still alive. (6)

For some years Fr Philip suffered from rheumatism. In 1917 he made a trip to New Zealand with his brother Patrick to try the curative properties of the hot springs at Rotorua.(7)

When Fr Philip Brady died on Wednesday night 21 June 1922 his assistant priests were Fr Michael Herbert and the recently ordained Fr Vincent Cleary. He was buried on Friday 23 June in one of the biggest funerals conducted in Maryborough. His brother Fr Patrick, parish priest of Gayndah, was present for the Office of the Dead and the Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr Cleary, with Fr Murphy as deacon and Fr Flanagan as sub-deacon, and Fr Herbert as master of ceremonies. Archbishop Duhig was absent in Rome. Fr W Lee and Fr W Cashman were present, with Fr Lee delivering "an eloquent panegyric, in the course of which there was scarcely a dry eye amongst the congregation".(8)

Fr Denis Martin writes of Fr Brady as: A man of retiring nature who never asserted his strength and force as he might have done; at the same time he was a charming conversationalist.(9)
