Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Gibbons, John Joseph

Born 14 August 1864, Ballylooby, Tipperary, Ireland. Details of education unknown. Studied at St John's College, Waterford. Ordained at Waterford in 1890, exact date unknown. Arrived in Armidale, spent some time at the cathedral, then was sent to Glen Innes where he remained for 17 years. He then was assigned to Narrabri. After some years in that town he took twelve months leave in Ireland (1910). On return to duty he was temporarily appointed to Quirindi to provide relief for some months, and then was appointed to Manilla from 10 March 1912, when it was established as a separate parish, cut from Tamworth, which had serviced the town. He died 10 August 1928, Manilla after a long illness, and was buried in Manilla cemetery. It is noted on his headstone that it was 'erected by his devoted parishioners and friends'.

Giblin, James

Listed in E J Doody, Acta et Statuta 1951, Appendix VI, Obituary List, in the section headed 'supplementary list of priests who have also worked in the diocese', but with no details other than the period he reputedly worked in the diocese, in this case 1898.
Evidence gathered suggests that no priest by the name James Giblin actually existed and that the priest referred to is John Joseph Gibbons.
