The death occurred yesterday at Ballarat of the Rev Father Joseph Davis, aged 72.

Father Davis was well known in the Western district, where he was stationed at various times at Ballarat, Hamilton, Mortlake, and Warrnambool, and recently at Coragulac. He had been parish priest at Casterton and Inglewood, and was responsible for the building of a new convent at Camperdown and a new church at Korongvale.

Surviving relatives of Father Davis are his brother, Father W. Davis, parish priest of Sea Lake, and two sisters, Mrs P. Devine, of Tongala, and Miss E. Davis, of Mair st, Ballarat.

The funeral will take place tomorrow at the Ballarat new cemetery after a Solemn Requiem Mass at St Patrick's Cathedral, Ballarat.

Davis, Joseph H., Australian
Gentlemanly Character

This kindly man that the writer knew well was born in Ballarat. The parents had come to the City of Gold from County Donegal. His brother, Father Bill, was also Ballarat-born and served the Diocese for many years as P.P. of Sea Lake. It was hard to see a fraternal resemblance — the latter was brusque, Father 'Joe' the very opposite. He was educated at the first Brothers' School in Skipton Street, at the Holy Ghost College which later was to become the present St. Patrick's College, taught by the Brothers. Studies for the priesthood were undergone at St. Patrick's College, Manly. His Ordinary, James Moore, ordained the subject on 21 December 1900, so Joe qualifies for this list by a mere 10 days. Often in trouble with his Bishops — successively Moore, Higgins, and Foley — for an alcoholic weakness, he was kept on the move. Directories show: Ballarat, Warrnambool, Hamilton (1902), St. Arnaud (1904), Mortlake (1904), a temporary charge of Camperdown (1907), Adm. at Mortlake 1907-10 during which time he sponsored the building of a church at Caramut, Pastor at Casterton 1910-16. Then came a denouement and a series of assistantships. Among them: Maryborough (1914)(1920), Sea Lake (1922), Horsham (1920) (1922), Inglewood (1922) (1925). The building of a church in the latter parish, at Korong Vale, stands to his credit. Fond of clerical company, a game of Solo and a choice cigar, the memory of gentleman Joe lingers on. His polished sermons were a delight to hear. He died on 24 March 1947 in St. John of God Hospital, Ballarat after a long period of indifferent health, aggravated by the liking referred to above. His remains lie in the Ballarat New Cemetery, and the age 76. Further information is available in the M.D.H.C. file, kept at Torquay.
