Biographical Notes

Cairns, Innisfail, Tully, Qld; Geraldton, WA.

---

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 44:

Clancy, Michael Martin, Very Rev., OSA, Irish
Clancy of 'Mountain' and 'Overflow' Fame

This famous character has been eulogised, glorified and photographed in previous issues - notably in Vol.2, No.s 3 & 4. So here we record the mere details: Born in Loughill, County Limerick, in August 1868. Entered the Augustinians in 1888. Ordained in 1893. Arrived in Australia in 1894. Apparently he had been attending to Geraldton (Innisfail) since late 1895 and was therefore no stranger to the district when he came to live there in 1899. The man and his colourful career as a part of the agricultural and spiritual life of Geraldton were well outlined in the extract from 'Hurricane Lamps and Umbrellas', by Dorothy Jones, and as reproduced in this journal. To say merely that Clancy was a great citizen of North Queensland, a worthy priest, and an ornament to his Order, would be an understatement. Death came on 20 May 1931, but the memory of the man remains an evergreen in the prosperous Innisfail.
