Biographical Notes

Our South Australian Letter, Advocate, Melbourne, 28 August 1886, p 8, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article170444835:

On Sunday, the Feast of St. Peter, the pretty church of St. Ignatius, Norwood, was the scene of a very interesting ceremony. The Rev. Francis Carroll, S.J., who had been admitted to the order of Deacon on the previous Sunday in the cathedral, was ordained Priest by the Bishop. The recently-elected Father Superior, and all the Fathers attached to the church were present, with the Vicar-General, and Rev. M. O'Sullivan, master of the ceremonies. The Rev. Fr. Carroll is a member of a very respectable family long resident in Kapunda, and is, I believe, the first native-born South Australian ordained in the province. Indeed, our revered bishop was the instrument under providence of opening to him all the channels of grace, from catechist to ordinary prelate.

Carroll, Francis J., S.J., Australian
South Australian Born Jesuit

This is a brother of Fr.Tom Carroll S.J., discussed later. The parents migrated from County Limerick, and it would appear that Father Tom was born in Limerick and that Francis was born on 4 October 1857 in Clare, close to Seven Hills. (Other records say he was born at Kapunda.) Training for the priesthood was received at the Jesuit House in Seven Hills and in Europe, probably in Austria, where he was ordained. The writer can find no description of the character of the man, but is able to indicate the main places of service - as shown in Directories. Jamestown (1892) (1898); Seven hills (1901). The last 25 years of service were spent in the Norwood, Adelaide. He died there on 26 July 1929 at the age of 71 and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery.

Fr David Strong SJ, The Australian dictionary of Jesuit biography 1848-2015, Second Edition, 2017:
Carroll, Francis

Pastor; born Kapunda, South Australia, 4 October 1857; died Adelaide, 25 July 1929, aged 71.

Francis Carroll, brother of Thomas, entered the Society at Sevenhill, South Australia, 9 February 1875, and left for studies in Europe in June 1882. However, he seems to have returned to Sevenhill the next year to continue his theology studies and was ordained at St Ignatius' Church, Norwood, 1 August 1886.

Very little is known about his early life, but he spent his priestly life in pastoral ministry, first at Jamestown, 1889-99, then at Sevenhill, 1900-05, and finally at Norwood, 1905-29. He performed the usual parish work, catechism in the school, and parish visitations. He was minister at Norwood, 1906-13, and spiritual father, 1925-28.

In 1901, after the amalgamation of the Austrian and Irish missions, he transferred to the Irish province. It was reported that he was well known and loved in the Norwood parish.
