Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 41:

Chouvier, Augustin, SM, French, Visitor
Missionary in Samoa for Many Years

Here we probably have another of the unsung heroes of the Pacific among the Marist Fathers. All we know, again from Father Hosie's Necrology (Drawn up for his M.A. Thesis), is that he was born in Puy, Annecy Diocese, on 10 September 1841. Profession took place on 20 September 1869, and in the same year he passed through Sydney on the way to the Pacific. He gave service in Samoa for many years. Directories of 1886 and 1899 place him on Upola Island in the Vicariate of Navigator Island. No mention is found in later directories. Death date is given as 5 July 1919, at the age of 77. More than likely he had attained his Golden Jubilee of priesthood.

Fr. Augustin Chouvier, d. 1919
Samoa
He was born in Haute-Loire, France in 1844. He followed his older brother, Jean-Pierre, into the Society being professed in 1869. In 1871, at the age of 27, he arrived in Samoa. His first appointment was to Leulumoega, from where he also served the island of Manono. His longest appointment was to Safotulafai where he worked for 27 years, the people calling him "the King of Savai'i". He died aged 75.
