Biographical Notes

Fr David Strong SJ, The Australian dictionary of Jesuit biography 1848-2015, Second Edition, 2017:
Gates, Joseph

Teacher, pastor; born Killyman, Co Tyrone, 20 March 1887; died Sydney, 19 July 1947, aged 60.

Joseph Gates was a colourful North of Ireland character, tall and well built, who entered the Society at Tullamore, 10 September 1909. He completed university studies at Milltown and philosophy at Gemert, 1912-15, before teaching, first in Mungret and then at Clongowes, 1915-18. Theology at Milltown followed, with tertianship at Tullamore, 1922-23.

He was sent to Australia and taught at St Aloysius' College, Milson's Point, 1923-25. Then he went to the parishes of Norwood, 1925-26, and Sevenhill, 1926-31, where he was also superior and parish priest for a time. He returned to teaching for a few years at Riverview, 1931-33, before more parish work at Lavender Bay, 1934-36, Richmond, 1937-38, Toowong, 1939-42, and finally, North Sydney, 1943-47.

Gates was very extreme in his views and very anti-British, yet kindly and friendly in personal dealings. He was a gifted man, a professed father, and very hard working and orderly, but not easy to live with on account of the severity of his views and the tenacity with which he held them. Superiors found him difficult. He never stayed long in one house, but he had not exhausted all the houses of the mission before he died.
