Carroll, John Joseph, Most Rev., Irish, Golden Jubilarian
Bishop of Great Piety
From conversations with priests who knew this Bishop the writer has gauged the impression that he regularly spent a long time in meditation and preparation for the saying of Mass, and said the Divine Office "digne, attente et devote". He was born on Christmas Day at Bresnor, Pilltown, County Kilkenny, in 1865. Education was received with the Cistercians at Mount Melleray and at St. Patrick's Seminary, Carlow. Ordination for Sydney took place in 1890. After a brief sojourn in Cooma he was appointed Administrator at St. Benedict's Sydney, remaining at the post until made Parish Priest of Moss Vale in 1903. His outstanding ability and worth as Adm. and Pastor came to be acknowledged. Accordingly he was appointed third bishop of Lismore, and was consecrated in the Lismore Cathedral by Cardinal Moran on 6 March 1910. A pointer to the progress of the diocese in the long thirty-nine year reign is found in the Summaries as published in the Directories of 1910 and 1949, with figures for the latter year being given in brackets ( ):- Churches 51 (88); Districts 19 (25); Diocesan Priests 22 (44); Religious Priests...(13); Nuns 91 (294); Brothers...(13); Boarding Schools for girls 6 (16); Boarding Schools for boys...(8); Secondary Schools 6 (26); Primary Schools 15 (40); Total receiving Catholic Education 2,270 (5,988); Total Catholic Population 19,500 (29,300). The saintly Bishop died in Brisbane on 8 May 1949 at the age of 83, having attained a Golden Jubilee of priesthood, and almost a Diamond Jubilee. His remains lie in the Middle Cemetery, Lismore.
