'Big Bill of Binolong'
Matt Cahill, retired Police Officer from Bungendore, Wagga, and elsewhere in the Riverina, and now living in Chatswood, was well acquainted with 'Big Bill' in his youthful days in Goulburn. The Goulburn Adm. came often to the home of Matt and his parents. They came from the same town in Ireland, claimed a family relationship that they could never prove, so the Adm. called Matt's father "Uncle" and his mother "Auntie". The regular visitor and celebrant of Matt's wedding in 1917 is described by the latter "huge, jovial fellow, 6' 4" tall, and weighing 20 stone". But there Matt's information ends so we turn to other sources. The nickname was given in All Hallows days and it was there that he was ordained in 1900. Directory tracings show that he was in Berrigan (1902), curate in Goulburn (1903) (1905), Tumut (1908), Adm. in Goulburn (1915) (1925). In building and maintaining Goulburn schools, the Jubilee book of 'The Christian Brothers in Australasia, 1869-1919', refers to him as "untiring and resourceful organiser". After his long term as an Administrator he had a holiday overseas in 1926-7. There followed a long reign at the quiet village of Binalong from 1928 to life's end in 1965. Along with Archbishop James Duhig who died in April '65, 'Big Bill' can be given the description of last 'of the pre-1901 survivors'. He had given over 64 years of service. Exact date of death is 31 Jan. 1965, and burial took place in the Binalong Cemetery.
