Cahill, Thomas Francis, Australian
Late Vocation in Geelong, Victoria
Possibly this was the first vocation to emanate from the Pivot. Thomas Francis was born on 21 Dec. 1862 and very likely was educated at the school taught by the Sisters of Mercy, the Order his sister entered. He was one of the early students at St. Patrick's College, Ballarat. Prior to studying at St. Patrick's Manly, he was a prominent young man in Geelong Societies: being Vice-President of the Catholic Young Mens' Society, and Secretary of the St. Patrick's Benefit Society. Ordination took place in Sydney, Nov. 1900, in the company of Thomas Nolan, later a well-known Pastor in Dalby, Queensland. The health of the newly-ordained was frail, hence we find him on loan from Melbourne to the more sunny climates of Wilcannia (1901) and Mount Morgan in Queensland (1903)(1904). Returning to his own diocese he served at Essendon and at Queenscliff (1908). He was Military
Chaplain at the local Fort for a time.
The health and chest condition deteriorating, he spent some time at the Coonara Private Hospital in St. Kilda Road, Melbourne. Death came unexpectedly on 3 Jan. 1914 at the age of 51. He is buried in Priests' Mortuary Chapel in the Geelong East Cemetery. A memorial window in the tiny Queenscliff Church is a reminder of the short career of this zealous servant of 60 years ago.
