Byrne, John Joseph, Irish
Last Administrator at St Francis' Haymarket
More details about this worthy have come in since his name was first recorded in Footprints. County of origin hasn't been ascertained. Seminary training was received at Holy Cross College, Clonliffe, Dublin, and at Propaganda College Rome. There is a gap between his ordination on 5.3.1882 and his arrival in Sydney on the 'Liguria' with Cardinal Moran on 7.11.1885. So probably he worked first on the home mission in Ireland. Main posts of service were at Wollongong where he was Pastor from 1892 to 1905 (Baptism records extend from 19.3.1892 to 22.2.1905), Administrator at St. Francis' Haymarket from 1905 to 1909 (Baptisms: 19.3.05 to 24.3.09); He was the last administrator at St. Francis' Haymarket on the corner of Campbell & Elizabeth Streets, presiding at a High Mass in January 1909 that marked the demolition of the church, serving the area now embraced by the Central Railway Station. 22.2.1912 marks the holding of a farewell function at St. Benedict's to mark J.J.'s departure for Ireland. He had served the Archdiocese well and refused a public testimonial. His later career has not been traced, but his praises continue to be sung by the student-writer of Sydney pioneer priests, Fr.Roger Wynne P.P., North Parramatta.
