Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 64:

Collender, John Keating, Very Rev., Irish
Zealous Adm. and P.P. in Armidale Diocese

He didn't have the longevity of his brother in Sydney, Monsignor Richard, but in the 35 years of service to Armidale he was known for his zeal and devotion to duty. The Collender brothers came from Modeligo, Co. Waterford, and both received their post-primary education with the monks of Mount Melleray. Richard went on to All Hallows Seminary, and John K. to Waterford. There appears to be an eight year difference between them - Richard being ordained in 1892 and John K. at the Mount Melleray Cathedral by Dr. Sheehan in mid 1900. Directories show places of service as follows:- Armidale (1900); Tamworth (1903); Wee Waa (1903)(1905); Bingera (1908)(1920)(1922) (1924) - during which time he went on an overseas trip in 1920. For six years, probably as from 1924, he was Adm. at Tamworth. His last pastorate was Manilla where he died suddenly on 5 June 1935.

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Collender, John Keating

Born 9 June 1876, Nicholastown, Cappoquin, Co Waterford, Ireland (or possibly Modeligo), educated Mount Melleray Cistercian Monastery, studied at St John's Seminary College, Waterford, ordained 14 June 1900. Came to the Armidale diocese, and was appointed initially to Armidale, then Tamworth. In March 1904 he was transferred to Wee Waa, where he remained until March 1907 when he went to Bingara. He remained in Bingara until after World War I, then continued in the town after the parish was split and Barraba established as a separate entity with Patrick Condon as the first parish priest. In 1911 he bought a motor car, reputedly the first priest in the diocese to do so. He took an overseas trip in 1920. In 1922 he was moved to Tamworth as Administrator of the parish, and remained there until August 1928 when he moved for the last time, to Manilla, in order to enjoy a lighter work load than at Tamworth, as his health was declining. He died on 5 June 1935 at Manilla, and is buried in Manilla cemetery. An older brother, Monsignor Richard Collender, parish priest of Woollahra, survived him.
