Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, pp 48-49:

Cleary, John J., Irish
First Pastor of Bungaree, Vic.

His brother, Robert J., also worked in the Ballarat Diocese, leaving behind a great record for zealous works. J.J. would seem to be of a different mould, and very likely was afflicted with an imbibing problem - at least that is the local tradition. The Clearys came from Kilfinane, County Limerick. The parents were Robert and Bridget (formerly Moloney). Place of J.J's. studies is unknown, but he was ordained in 1882. Coming to the Ballarat Diocese that year he was stationed in turn at Hamilton, Ballarat, Koroit, Smythesdale. In 1888 he became the first pastor of the very Irish and Catholic area east of Ballarat. Four years were spent in hard pioneering, but in 1892 something seemed to go wrong. The pastor was relegated to an assistant's role and appears to have spent the remaining years of service in Maryborough and Warrnambool. Last Directory entry in 1899 - which may indicate "into the mists", but more likely a return to County Limerick.
