Biographical Notes

Clerical Visitors, Advocate, Melbourne, 2 June 1877, p 7, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article170435974:

The Rev. Messrs. Fabris, De Romanis, and Tanganelli, Italian priests, arrived in Melbourne on Saturday night last by the R.M.S. Travancore, en route for the Diocese of Brisbane. The reverend gentlemen left Rome about twelve months since, and proceeded to Bombay, whence they came hither by the Travancore, They left for Sydney on Monday. The same mail steamer had amongst her passengers the Rev. Mr. Keating, of the Archdiocese of Sydney, who went home to Ireland a couple of years since, and spent a year and nine months in the monastery of the Order of La Tropp [La Trappe], Mount Mellery [Melleray], Waterford. During their brief stay in Melbourne, the four reverend gentlemen named were the guests of his Grace the Archbishop at the Palace, Eastern Hill. They were present in the cathedral at Vespers on Sunday evening, when one of the Italian clergymen gave Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Father Keating left Melbourne for Sydney with the other reverend gentlemen. We have heard it stated that the Italian priests will probably be engaged in the Chinese mission in Queensland.

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 139:

De Romanis, Cherubino, Italian
Cherubino (what an angelic name!) arrived in Melbourne on the 'Travancore' in the company of Frs. Tanganelli and Fabri (or Fabris). The 'Advocate' (Melb.), 2.6.1877, states that they were joining the Chinese Mission. The reporter must have got his lines crossed, for the trio were destined to spend close on two years in the Vicariate Apostolic of Cooktown. Monsignor John Cani, stout opponent of Bishop James Quinn, had been appointed Vicar Apostolic of Cooktown in 1877, prior to his consecration as Bishop of Rockhampton in 1882. So the companions were stationed as far north as any missionaries could go. Their success was questionable. They became discontented and left on the 'Avoca' for the Calcutta Mission in February 1879. A pity more is not known of their career.
