Michael Colman joined the Society at Tullamore, Ireland, as a secular priest, 6 September 1890. He spent a few years reading theology at Milltown Park, 1892-94, before teaching at Belvedere, 1894-95, at Clongowes, 1895-96, and at Galway, 1898-00. He did some work as a rural missionary, 1896-98, and worked in the church at Tullamore until 1902, when he was assigned as a military chaplain in South Africa, 1902-03. Tertianship at Tronchiennes followed. He was sent to China for a few years, 1905-07, and returned to parish work at Galway, 1907-08, before going to Australia and the parish of Norwood, 1908-11. He also worked at Hawthorn, 1911-13, and Loyola, Greenwich, 1913-14, returning to Norwood, 1914-19. During this time he was appointed military chaplain, embarking for Egypt in September 1915, but his service was terminated in December 1915, because of ill health. He only completed the voyage and saw no action. Back in Australia he gave missions and retreats in other parts of the country and was finally sent to Sevenhill, 1919-20. He was a man with intemperate zeal, dogged with ill health. He had considerable talent, but was very hard to manage. That may account for his continual movement during his life in the Society.
