Cogan, Peter, Irish
Pastor of Scone, Maitland Diocese

Peter Cogan was born in County Meath and studied for the priesthood at All Hallows, Dublin. Ordained at the College in 1892 he set out to take up his duties in the Maitland Diocese at the end of the same year. Directory tracings show: assistant at Muswellbrook 1893-6, assistant at Branxton 1896-9. Parish priest in Murrurundi 1899-1916. Murrurundi had as outposts Haydonton and Blandford - both with churches. A parochial school in the parish centre held its attendance of 70 pupils during Father Cogan's stay. Transferred to Scone in 1916 he served that parish, while living with a retired P.P. incapacitated with rheumatism - Fr. Edmond McGrath. At the same time that the latter died in 1919, Cogan fell into ill-health himself and went on leave. At least that is how he is listed in later directories. Later his name disappears from the clergy list, and Maitland records show that he died in Ballinlough, County Meath "among his own", on 22 February 1935.
