Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, pp 61-62:

Coleman, William, Rt. Rev., Irish, Visitor
Vicar General in Dunedin

Mention is made of him here only because he was visiting Sydney in February 1871, in the company of Bishop Patrick Moran who a few years before had been transferred to Dunedin. Coleman was born 1834 (circa) in County Waterford, and was educated at Maynooth for the Diocese of Cloyne. He served his native diocese for some ten years before joining the bishop who was also a Maynooth man and who for about ten years had charge of the Vicariate of the Cape of Good Hope (eastern part). The visitors to Sydney in February 1871 assisted at the opening of the Carcoar church, and went on by the 'Glendower' to New Zealand. The V.G. appears to have served his bishop well, having charge of the parish of Oamaru. He was rewarded with Monsignorial honours in 1889, but death came his way on 15 January 1890 at the age of 55. Cardinal Moran's history has references to the 'good and faithful servant' on page 956 and a photo can be found on page 920.
