Brereton, Edward Francis, Irish
Intervention in a State Election

b. in King's Co., close to Birr, 1844. Lived in USA as a youth. Ed.: AH; ord. '80 for Madras Mission, where he became afflicted by sunstroke. Came to Perth where he was stationed at the Cathedral. Then to Geraldton where he came into conflict with the Masonic Lodge for burying an ex-Mason who had become a Catholic. He won the day but the Masons never forgave. Hence when he denounced an election candidate from the Altar, Simpson, the Masons and the 'Western Mail' pursued him with 'scorpions'. V.G., Mgr. Bourke, had to side with the pursuers. Kanowna, Flack Flag, and Perth were later places of service. Retired to live with his married sister in Syd. d. 12.12.1904 at age of 60 (circa). Burial: Rookwood.
