Advocate, Melbourne, 17 November 1888, p 15, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article169708616:
Among the clergymen by the Ormuz, there were six who went on by that vessel to Sydney, and included in the number was the Rev. John Carroll, brother of Rev. T. Carroll, Deniliquin, diocese of Goulburn.
ANZCC note: Several published passenger lists show this person as "Rev. P. Carroll". The archival passenger list at https://prov.vic.gov.au/archive/426B1A03-F96C-11E9-AE98-DB924F6A1A19?image=382 lists Rev. P. Carroll, age 38, cabin passenger for Sydney.

Carroll, John, Irish
The passenger list of the 'Ormuz' which arrived in Melbourne on 9.11.1888 lists this elusive man. He is described as a brother of Thomas Joseph Carroll (see C43) who in 1888 was temporarily at Deniliquin. If this is correct John would have come from the Cashel Diocese. He is reputed to have served temporarily in Rockhampton.
(Footprints, Vol. 2, No. 3)
Ref.: Dean Paul Healion, Walkerston. (Rockhampton Diocese).
ANZCC note: This entry conflates two persons: 1) Fr P. Carroll, as per Advocate above. 2) The reference to a priest in Rockhampton is actually a reference to Fr Edward Carroll, who did not arrive in 1888 but in about 1900.

Carroll, Patrick, Irish
The writer finds P.C. an elusive quarry, and statements that follow are submitted tentatively in the hope that a reader will turn on the searchlight. In the files it is stated that he was ordained from Carlow on 15 June 1867, arriving in Sydney the same year. He served for a time at St. Benedict's, and from 1870-8 was at Parramatta. Probably he went from there to St. Mary's Cathedral and Haymarket. From 1883-6 there was a Carroll at Wollongong but the Directory gives the man's initials as R.V. On 2 August 1890 a P. Carroll appears at the Broken Hill Synod of priests. Directories of 1893 and '4 show that he continued on in that new diocese under Bishop John Dunne. One can only guess that it is the same P. Carroll who is listed for Pekina, South Australia in 1898, and after a lapse of time appears at New Norcia in 1906 and 1915.
