Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 135:

Delany, James P., Rt. Rev., V.G., Irish
Director of N.Z. Tablet for Many Years

(Contributed by Very Rev. P. Mee, Chancellor, Dunedin).
Although only a passer-by so far as the Australian list goes, this distinguished Dunedin priest deserves a mention. He was born at Arrowtown N.Z., on 8 June 1874, being the eldest son of James and Mrs Delany. Educated at the Catholic School in Arrowtown and at the Christian Brothers' High School. Father P.M. Lynch CSSR and Brother Magee perceived signs of a vocation to the priesthood and with their commendation he was sent by Bishop Moran to St. Patrick's College, Manly. He completed his studies at the Urban College of the Propagation of the Faith in Rome and was ordained in the Basilica of St. John Lateran on 12 June 1897 — the first Otago born student to be raised to the dignity of the Priesthood. On his return Father James was stationed as curate at Lawrence, South Dunedin, and Oamaru. In 1902 he was appointed Vice-Rector of the Holy Cross Seminary, Mosgiel, where he taught English, Latin, and French. Returning later to parish work he served as relieving priest at Invercargill, Ranfurly and Gore. In 1911 he was appointed to South Dunedin where he remained for 48 years until ill-health caused his retirement in January 1949.

Father James was a priest of wide reading in a great variety of subjects and possessed a remarkable organising power and administrative ability. These qualities were early recognised by Bishop Whyte who appointed him Vicar General, an office he held for 20 years. He was created a Domestic Prelate by Pius XI in 1934.

He was a Director of the 'Tablet' for many years. The sick, the needy children always had a warm place in his heart, and it was during his administration of the parish of South Dunedin that the fine parish school was erected for £3000 and opened free of debt. As well he displayed a fatherly interest in orphans, the Little Sisters' Home, St Vincent de Paul Society, and the Hibernian Society. R.I.P. 9 January 1951. Age: 76.
